THE MOOSETTE: The Moosette Fight Club

21 December 2012

Marianna AKA The Moosette

The first rule of Moosette Fight Club is... that you don't talk about Moosette Fight Club! Unless you read my blog, which means you are in the 'circle of trust'.

I have a laundry room in the basement of my building with a disused room next to it which up until now has been a communal dumping ground for my neighbour’s unwanted paraphernalia. Now, for the whole time that I’ve been living in this building I’ve always been a little timid of this slightly derelict space. However, a few weeks back to my great surprise the landlord decided to clear the clutter and that’s when I got my brill idea and decided that I should have my boxing sessions in my basement. It makes perfect sense! There is plenty of room, it’s a square space like a boxing ring and this is a great alternative if it's late, dark or rainy, and opting for a workout in the park is probably as appealing as a punch in the face.

Poor Gerald was a little bewildered when I led him all the way down two flights of stairs. I suppose he was half expecting to find the seedy underbelly of the West End - some guys clad in cheap suits smoking cigars and playing poker - the space is good but it's not that good. We managed to have an ace boxing session complemented by squats, lunges, hurdles, sideways lunges and tricep dips on the old radiator. I had plenty of space to move around so once again we worked on my foot movement and stamina. We did proper amateur rounds as well: 4 x 2 minutes! The only thing missing was a rowdy crowd and a cute lady in a skimpy outfit indicating the end of a round.

I praise Gerald for his flexibility as he is able to make any space work regardless of how odd it is. Now, the mean streets of Marylebone are no match for me! Oh and once again, stay schtum about my flight club. ;-)

THE MOOSETTE: Team Moosette do hammer time!

18 December 2012

Marianna AKA The Moosette

One of my favourite Moose X-Training classes is my Saturday morning group session in Primrose Hill outdoor gym. I’m proud of having successfully managed to badger my mates into coming along to this class and they love it!

Everyone is generally more relaxed on a Saturday morning and no one is in any particular rush to get anywhere. Needless to mention how much fun it is training with your mates and how much gossip you can squeeze into a 50 minute class.

The session was quite intense but we had the gorgeous weather on our side. Gerald was merciless with the exercise and somewhat baffled and fascinated by our girlie natter. To put it in Gerald's words: "Ahhhh! So this is what women talk about? Wow."

Once again we had a varied and very intense cardio/circuit workout complete with ladder drills, whinging, hurdle jumps, moaning, star jumps, squealing, press ups, pull ups, squats and something completely new: the Hammer Time exercise! Confused? Remember back in the day circa 1990, MC Hammer? Do you recall the Hammer Time dance? Like a badly choreographed flash mob, Gerald made us do the Hammer Time dance. Check it out on YouTube: Harder to do than it looks and boy does your bottom hurt afterwards!

So, see you on Saturday at Primrose Hill? Come on, you know you want to "break it down" with us!

THE MOOSETTE: Knockout

17 December 2012

I had a Box with the MOOSE session with Gerald, at home. Gerald made sure he warmed me up first with a full circuit set before we got down to the nitty-gritty i.e. boxing!

We were really focusing on technique and leg movements in today's class. I've got to say boxing is a great way of channelling my anger and I feel so mellow after the workout that it’s unbelievable. I no longer carry around all that pent up rage.

Now I realise that I am a pasty, slightly overweight, and at times VERY uncoordinated 30-something but in my head when I'm training with Gerald I am the thriller from Manila! I can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!

I feel like my technique has really improved, as I’m now throwing some mean punches, I'll have you know! I have Gerald's patience and tenacity to thank for that.

THE MOOSETTE: It’s 12/12/2012 so make it count!

13 December 2012

Most of us have a lucky number. Mine has always been 3. I'm not a superstitious person but when one of the century's last sequential dates occurs in our lifetime you can't help but recognise!

So like some palindrome loving numerologist, I ponder about the significance of the number 12 on my way to my workout in the park with the MOOSE.

12 months of the year, 12 hours of the day and night, 12 astrological signs, 12 Olympic gods and goddesses, 12 days of Christmas and, oh did I mention 12 different exercises complete with 12 reps courtesy of the MOOSE on this phenomenal day?

1.     Skipping with a skipping rope. Check out the video evidence of my excellent technique. Not.

2.     The plank

3.     Tricep dips

4.     Push ups

5.     Kettle bell squats

6.     Sprints

7.     Crunches

8.     Lunges

9.     Resistance bands

10.   Jump squats

11.   Bicycle crunches

12.   Kettle bell high pull!

On such an epic day like today, it's only fair to have an epic workout!

THE MOOSETTE: Ice, ice baby!

12 December 2012

Marianna AKA The Moosette

Brrrrrr... is all I can say after my morning session with Gerald in the park! Frost covered the ground, and only squirrels desperately scavenging for nuts kept me company as I did: burpees, the plank, boxing, press ups and triceps dips against a park bench as well as a new exercise that was introduced to me today - ladder drills! Oh, and the drills vary - a lot! And there'svideo evidence of these. Oh dear!

Gerald gave me the proverbial kick up the jacksie that I needed this morning to warm me up as it was freezing!  My workout also felt more boot-campy today. I think Gerald must have been inspired by the group of army cadets that jogged past us earlier!

To the tune of: "Left, right! Left, right!" I am soldiering on to work now... Over and out! Brrrr...

All I want for Christmas is... a FLAT tummy!

11 December 2012

We feel obliged to state that just doing sit-ups every day won’t get you the perfect six-pack, as you need to throw strength and cardio exercises into the mix. Having said that, the Holy Grail for many of us is the quest for the tight washboard abs. Really, the lengths we will go to for a flat tummy!

In the spirit of goodwill and for this period of spreading waistlines, we’re sharing our Flat Tummy Workout with you. If you engage in regular cardio workouts, develop a healthy diet AND do our 10 minute Flat Tummy Workout every other day, you’ll have a pretty decent core sorted. We’re not promising Jessica Ennis levels of abs, but you’ll have nothing to worry about when you next head to the beach.

The Flat Tummy Workout.

If you’re not sure what the exercises below are, please look for a video for guidance or better yet, consult the MOOSE!

Warm up (1 minute):

1. 30 second COBRA stretch

2. 30 second CAT stretch

Flat Tummy Workout (8 minutes):

Focusing on the core:

a. SINGLE LEG PLANK – 2 sets of 1 minute each.  (To make this harder, switch legs halfway through each minute.)

b. SIDE PLANK – 2 sets of 45 seconds on each side.  (To make this harder, lift the top leg off the floor!)

Targeted stomach exercises (1 set of each to be repeated 3 times):

a. CRUNCHES – 3 sets of 20.

b. JACK-KNIFE (AKA “V”) SITUPS – 3 sets of 12.

c. CYCLE EXERCISE - 3 sets of 20.

Don’t forget about how the back and stomach are connected:

a. BACK EXTENSIONS – 3 sets of 14.

Cool down (1 minute):

1. 30 second COBRA stretch

2. 30 second CAT stretch

THE MOOSETTE: Some home truths

10 December 2012

Marianna AKA The Moosette

As I stand around timidly, backstage and in a corner at the V&A 'Fashion in Motion' event and ogle the absolutely stunning models as they gracefully swan around in the latest Fyodor Golan collection waiting to have their last touch ups, I have two sharp thoughts intermittently running through my head. Firstly, WHY did I come along to this? Lovely of my cousin's gorgeous model friend to invite me but I realise that I have partaken in a self -destructive exercise of complete body image suicide coupled with a side of self-loathing.  Secondly, I desperately need to locate the V&A cafe so that I can go and cry into a piece of comfort chocolate cake.

Luckily, the next day the MOOSE comes to the rescue and I greet him on my doorstep.  I’ve booked a lesson with the MOOSE at home! I’ve been reluctant to book a session at home as like most Londoners I’m limited for space, but I was surprised at how little space we needed to do our workout. We literally did it in the hallway! I had my big old mirror that I could see myself in and we did a variety of exercises: lunges, Swiss Ball crunches, sit ups, the plank, squats, jump squats, squats with the kettle bell, a little boxing and we used resistance bands for my arm workout. The session flew by!

Marianna AKA The Moosette

I think that it's a great idea to workout at home especially if it's late, raining or after work. It's nice that the MOOSE comes to you and you can workout in the comfort of your own home with your favourite tracks playing in the background. However, I still like my workouts in the park as it's my only chance to get some fresh air and you can run around. I'm definitely going to vary the locations as I think both are great.

Now I may never be a catwalk model but my body is going to be the best it can possibly be, and thanks to the MOOSE it’s well on its way to reaching this very attainable goal both indoors and outdoors!
